In the movie “Strange Red” we will meet Mei Lee, a 13-year-old girl of Chinese origin who lives in the capital of Canada. Something strange happens to Mei, who transforms into a giant red panda when she feels nervous or anxious – which has been happening pretty much all the time lately.

This was PIXAR's subtle way of approaching menstruation in female adolescence and the embarrassment and confusion that all the changes the body undergoes.

In Toronto, Mei Lee lives with Ming, the overprotective and even a little arrogant mother, who is never far from her daughter – a sad reality for the teenager.

The film takes place in 2002 and evokes memories of the director's adolescence (and, we believe, of some of today's parents). Mei and her friends have tamagochis, CD players and are obsessed with the band 4*Town.

Strangely Red: a Chinese production for Pixar!

“Bizarrely Red” is Pixar Animation Studios director Domee Shi’s first original feature film, as well as the studio’s first feature film directed entirely by a woman and with an all-female creative team.

Young actress Rosalie Chiang voices Mei Lee and Sandra Oh lends her voice to Ming.

Directed by Shi and produced by Lindsey Collins, Disney*Pixar's "Turning Red" hits theaters in 2022.
